The Punjab government on Monday accepted that there were deaths in the state due to overdose of drugs.
In written reply to AAP MLA Aman Arora’s question, Health Minister Brahm Mohindra said chemical examination confirmed 56 deaths in financial year 2018-19 and 11 in 2017-18.Amritsar reported the highest with 11 deaths in 2018-19, while Tarn Taran was second with nine deaths.The staggering figure from the overdose of drugs has left the state worrying and people struggling with rage, sadness and anxiety. Drug overdose led to the recent spate of deaths of addicts in Punjab, forensic reports have confirmed.According to reports of 45 viscera samples, morphine overdose has been identified as the killer in 80 per cent of the cases. All deaths related to opioids are classified under morphine. Overdose of pain relievers and de-addiction medicines also proved fatal.During the last two months, Punjab has been rattled by reports of deaths of drug addicts. The Tribune had reported last month that, on an average, one person had died everyday due to drug overdose.
